Mary was the daughter of William John Rout and Jane Bealle Routh nee Watson.

Mary served in India from 1917-1919 as a Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service.

In addition to the British War Medal, Mary was awarded the Indian General Service Medal with clasp 'Afghanistan, N.W. Frontier 1919".
