The three Cochrane brothers served in World War One. Hector joined the 9th Light Horse and served in Egypt for the majority of the war. He was returned to Australia late 1915 on the Karoola due to having measles and enteric fever. After convalescing Hector re-embarked Katuma at Adelaide on 23 June 1916 and returned to Egypt on 9 August. He was treated for phthisis/ tuberculosis at the 14 Australian General Hospital, Egypt on 4 August 1917. Hector was sent home from Suez with pulmonary tuberculosis on board the Wiltshire on 11 November 1917 and was discharged on 21 June 1918.
