Elma Mary Linklater was born on July 14 1879, in Willochra, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. She lived there with her father, Edwin Linklater until she enlisted on the 16th of April 1915. She was 5 foot 2 and described her complexion as fair. Her eyes were blue and she had fair hair.

She passed her trained nurse's association exam in December 1912. She worked in the 3rd Australian General Hospital, with the Australian Army nursing services. On the 15th of May 1915, she embarked from Australia and her first known record comes from the 27th of January 1916, when she disembarked from Oxfordshire. In February of the same year, she travelled to Alabassia and at some time during the. On 29/8/16 she went on leave and returned on 2/9/16. In October she arrived in Brighton, England.

Her next record is from February 1917 when she was granted leave and then when she rejoined a month later. In May of the same year, she proceeded overseas to join Southampton BEF. On 24/5/17 She rejoined the 3rd AGH in Abbeville, France.

On 10/3/18 she travelled from Abbeville to England on leave and rejoined on 24/3/18. On 4/6/18 she received a special mention in Sir. Douglas Haig's despatch. On 31/7/18 she was given a week's leave and returned on 7/9/18. On 24/10/18 her father received a letter notifying him that Elma's name appeared in "Commonwealth Australia Gazette".

Her next record comes from the 8th of January 1919 when she took leave and returned 17 days later (still in Abbeville). 4 months later she was instructed to report for duty with a matron in London. She then took leave from there. She disembarked from London on 26/8/19 to return home to Australia.

On 26/8/19 Elma's father received another letter saying that she had been awarded a Royal Red Cross Award and it was mentioned in "Commonwealth Australia Gazette". She was also awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal and on 13/10/20 she received two oak leaves (one big and one small), the emblem for being mentioned in the despatch. She also received a certificate for her mention. That is the last record of Elma Linklater.
