Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Joseph was the eldest of five children of George Moss (b1853 in Wiltshire, England) and Ada Leonora Starling (b1866 at Ross Creek in Victoria). George was a Labourer when he immigrated to Adelaide SA in 1880 on board the Orient. He and Ada married in Adelaide SA in 1887 where they settled and raised their family.

In 1915 Joseph was a Labourer living in Adelaide SA with his common-law wife Ellen (Nellie) Lavinia Greenwood (nee Toogood b1891 in Coongulmerang, Victoria) and their daughter - Nellie had abandoned her husband and child in Broken Hill NSW in 1912. Joseph enlisted in the AIF in March 1915 (Private, Service No:1546) and was WiA in France in 1916. His mother Ada wrote to the Department of Defence complaining that she was his NoK and that he was not married - although Joseph had stated in his Attestation Papers that he was married and that Ellen - his wife - was his NoK. Joseph was Discharged in October 1917. Ellen relocated to Sydney, NSW and in 1918  Joseph married Trixie Martin (b1900 at Marryattville, SA) in 1918 in Norwood, SA.

Joseph and Trixe settled in Port Adealide, SA where Joseph was a Motor Driver and Bookmaker. He died in 1958 and Trixie in 1968.
