Walter Hume served at the Anzac Landing and was shot in the foot around the 10 May 1915. He was evacuated to Malta and then Egypt weeks later. He re-joined his Battalion at Gallipoli in late August 1915 and was again evacuated during December 1915 with pleurisy. He was transferred to the 57th Battalion during the reorganisation of the AIF in Egypt during early 1916.

He was wounded again during the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England with shrapnel damage to his left forearm. He joined his Battalion again in France during February 1917 and was mortally wounded a month later, on 9 March 1917, dying the same day.
