Allan Stewart Bailey was born in Corryong, Victoria in 1893. He was one of eleven children. His father was William Bailey and his mother was Catherine nee Fraser. One of his brothers Stanley Bailey also went to war. Allan went to school in Colac Colac, around 10 kms out of Corryong. Allan was 6 feet tall and weighed 185lbs when he enlisted in the 1st AIF on the 6th August 1915 at Melbourne Victoria. He was allocated the Regimental Number 2578. On the 6th August 1915, he was posted to a company of the 7th Battalion for recruit training. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 27 October 1915.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 31 March 1916. Wounded in action, 22-25 July 1916 (gun shot wound, face); admitted to 26th General hospital, Etaples, 25 July 1916; transferred to England, 28 July 1916, and admitted to Military Hospital, Chatham; discharged on furlough, date not recorded. Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 5 March 1917 (scabies); discharged from hospital, 22 March 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917. Admitted to 24th General Hospital, Etaples, 17 April 1917 (mumps); transferred to Convalescent Depot, 29 May 1917; rejoined 7th Bn, in the field, 12 June 1917. On leave to England , 28 January 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 13 February 1918. Appointed Driver, 28 October 1918. On leave to England, 7 January 1919; rejoined unit from leave,  21 January 1919. Marched out to England for return to Australia, 20 March 1919. Commenced return to Australia on board HT Soundan , 22 June 1919; discharged (medicallly unfit), Melbourne, 16 September 1919. For his service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British Warr Medal, Victory Medal.
