Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

John Leslie FUGE, (Service Number 20126) was born on 14 March 1896 at Muswellbrook, NSW. He was one of six children of Joseph and Isabella Sarah (née Wilkins) Fuge of Muswellbrook. John’s mother died in 1901 leaving her oldest child, Belinda Grace Fuge, to raise the children. John’s father died in 1917.
John joined the NSWGR&T as a Gatekeeper (Temporary) at Muswellbrook on 13 November 1912 and his position was made permanent on 1 January 1913. On 29 March 1914 he was appointed as a junior porter at Muswellbrook and he stayed at Muswellbrook until 11 August 1916 when he transferred to Denman. On 14 March 1917 he was appointed as a porter at Walgett and on 31 August 1917 he was appointed Leading Goods porter, also at Walgett. On 4 February 1918 he was granted leave for military service.
When John joined the he was posted to the Army Medical Corps Reinforcements with the rank of Private (Service No. 20126).

On 22 October 1918 he embarked for England aboard HMAT A36 ‘Boonah’ at Adelaide, SA. This ship was part way through her voyage when she was recalled as the war had ended. John disembarked at Woodman’s Point Quarantine Station, Fremantle, on 11 December 1918 suffering from pneumonic Influenza and he died there in the early hours of the following morning.

He nominated his brother, George Fuge of Muswellbrook, as his next of kin. He was initially sent on duty to the Field Hospital at Liverpool, NSW, from 8th to 27th February 1918. He was then sent to the Army General Hospital at Randwick, NSW, until 6th August 1918.

By February 1919 John’s sister Belinda had become his official next of kin. In his Will, he nominated another of his sisters, Pearl Emma Armitage (née Fuge) of Croydon, NSW, as his sole legatee. John’s grave is in Rockingham Cemetery, Rockingham, Western Australia.
