Stanley Andrews Castle was a dedicated soldier who served in World War I. He was born in Stirling on the 26th of October in 1895. Stanley’s eyes were grey, with fair hair and skin, and he followed the Protestant religion. His father Edmund Castle who lived in Aldgage, was his nominated next of kin.
Before the war, Stanley worked as a railway porter, a job that required both physical endurance and precision. His responsibilities likely included loading and unloading cargo, assisting passengers, and ensuring the smooth operation of train services.
According to the National Archives, Stanley was 19 years and 7 months old when he first enlisted for World War I on 11th May 1915. He completed training in Adelaide and embarked on the HMAT Star of England 21st September 1915.
By the 18th of December 1915, Stanley disembarked at Mudros, a Greek island. Stanley was then moved to Alexandria 27th/12/1915.
Stanley served with the 3rd and 4th Light Horse as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in April 1917 with a shrapnel wound to his left buttock and was sent to hospital. He returned to duty 4 days later after treatment. He bacame ill several times during his service with scabies, general debility, and malaria. He completed signals training in 1917 and became a Signal Corporal in January 1918.
He was repatriated back to Australia on the ship 'Delta' arriving back 9th March 1919 and was dischared 26th May 1919 after 4 years and 16 days of service.
Stanley's dedication to his country did not end with World War I. Twenty-four years later, in 1942, Stanley fought in World War II again, this time at around 43 years old. His continued service is a testament to his enduring bravery and commitment to his country.
