Searle Cuthbert Williams was born in the year 1891 in Koringa, South Australia to his mother, Mrs Elizabeth Jane Williams. He worked as a labourer until his enlisment for the Australian Imperial Force on 6 April 1916.
He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia fighting as a part of the 32nd Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 12 August 1916 on board HMAT A70 Ballarat. He fought at the Western Front as a Sapper, initially with the 32nd Battalion before being transferred to the Corps Troops Signal Company. He later served in World War II as well, in the RAN.
