Son of Thomas Charles Gilchrist and Mary Elizabeth Gilchrist of 202 Albany Road, Petersham, NSW. Brother of John Stanislaus Gilchrist who returned to Australia on 22 July 1919 having served with the 57th Battalion
In 1925c Francis married Veronica Mary Tynan at Marrickville.Veronica died in 1968
