Born in Durham Ox, Victoria in 1882, Robert was the fourth of nine children of Robert (Bob) Crawford (b1855 in Geelong, Victoria) and first wife Anne Elizabeth Neale (b1855 in Warwickshire, England). Bob (a Baker) and Anne married in 1875 in Carisbrook, Victoria and lived in the region (Maryborough, Carisbrook, Durham Lead, Kerang, Durham Ox) until 1894 when Bob moved Anne and the children to Box Hill in Melbourne, Victoria and left for the WA Goldfields with his sister-in-law, their two children together and Bob's eldest son Jim.
Robert was a Clergyman in 1913 in Beechworth, Victoria when he married Mary Morris Orton (b1883 in Beechworth, Victoria) - Mary was a Teacher in Yackandandah and Beechworth. Robert enlisted in the AIF in June 1917 (Private, Driver; Service No:18476) and served in Palestine and Syria with Australian Army Medical Corps, including 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance. Discharged in March 1919, Robert and Mary settled in Sydney, NSW where Robert worked as a Commercial Traveller.
In May 1941 Robert was a Lorry Driver when he enlisted in the ACMF (Sergeant; Service No:N270032) and served with 112 Convalescent Depot and 1 Australian Base Postal Unit. Discharged in April 1944, he and Mary settled in Carlingford in Sydney NSW and Robert worked as a Commercial Traveller. He died in 1954 and Mary in 1971.
