Clarence left Fremantle on HMAT Geelong on 5 June 1915 bound for the Middle East. Shortly after disembarking he was admitted to the 7th Field Ambulance H.S. Valdivia on 18 August followed by admission to No.2 General Hospital at Ghezireh with debility on 2 October. Clarence was treated for diarrhoea at Camp Luxor Convalescent Depot on 28 November and No. 2 General Hospital at Cairo. Due to having dysentery and being diagnosed suffering from rheumatism and heart disease, Clarence left Suez on the Nestor in March 1916 and was discharged as medically unfit on 15 September. He was granted a pension of 3 pounds per fortnight as from 16 September 1916.
