Returned to Australia 12 May 1918. Discharged due to VDH - valvular disease of the heart or physical indications of stress or fatigue. Had episodes in hospital throughout his service for stress. He died of war related illness in Lockhart 9 February 1920. 

His brother, 3563 Private George Edward Ford 18th Battalion AIF, was killed in action 28 July 1916, age 25.
