Private Percy Edward Cherry (Service No:3278) served with the Senior Cadets Warwick before enlisting in the AIF on 25 May 1917, and was attached to 41st Battalion 8th Reinforcements on 14 June 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Liverpool on board HMAT A20 Hororata. Private Cherry served in France, and on 6 Janauary 1918 was transferred to Army Medical Corps (AMC) Details. On 2 January 1919 Private Cherry embarked from England for Brisbane on board HT Karmala, and was attached to AMC Details at Discharge on 20 March 1919. Older brother William Jnr enlisted as a Trooper with 15th Light Horse Regiment in 1915, but was declared Medically Unfit; and older brother Sid served in the AIF in WWI. Younger brothers Les and Eric served in WWII.

Percy was born in Warwick, QLD in 1899, eighth of fourteen children of William Henry Cherry (b1864 in Windsor, Hawkesbury City, New South Wales) and Mary Ann Eldridge (b1870 in London, England) - Mary immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1874, arriving in Moreton bay on board the Great Britain. William was a Labourer in 1886 when he and Mary married in Warwick. The couple lived in Killarney, at Thanes Creek and Rosenthral, in Toowoomba and Warwick where they raised their family. William worked as a Labourer, as a Drover across southern QLD/northern New South Wales, and as a Farmer.

Percy was a Labourer in Warwick when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge was a Bootmaker in Toowoomba in 1923 when he married Susanna Brunner (b1903 in Toowoomba, QLD). Percy and Susanna settled in Toowoomba, where they raised their family and Percy was a Bootmaker until the early 1940s when he joined the Postmaster General's Department as a Postman. Percy died in 1967 and Susanna in  1986.
