Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Augustus Rickard was the son of John and Elizabeth Rickard of Brunswick, Victoria. The father, John, had passed away during 1902 when Augustus was but 15 years of age.
Augustus had an older brother who had enlisted in Western Australia, 4879 Private Charles Ernest Rickard 51st Battalion AIF, who had been killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916, aged 33.
Augustus or ‘Gus’ Rickard was a runner in the 38th Battalion and he was seen by several eye witnesses to have been killed instantly by a shell late on 7 June after having carried messages constantly between HQ and the front line all day.
His mother, Elizabeth, eventually received his medals and entitlements.
