Add my storyBiography
William Charles Medlyn was the son of Mr. Thomas Medlyn, who arrived from Cornwall in the early days of the State. On the completion of his studies William entered the service of Harrold Brothers, but gave up commercial work to join the clerical staff of the Adelaide Hospital in February, 1887, and was appointed secretary there in 1901. He was a capable and thoroughly well liked administrator who found time to serve in the South Australian Military Forces when they were under local control. He later served as a captain in the 10th Regiment of Australian Infantry. In addition to 'his hospital duties,' he had been secretary to the Commissioner of Charities. He played cricket and in musical circles was known as an orchestral performer. After meeting the courting Miss Matilda Graves the daughter of Mr. Henry Graves, the well known carrier they were married. During the Great War he served as a Captain in the AIF and was the Quarter Master with 3rd General Hospital until he fell ill at Lemnos and returned to the Base at Mudros.
