Biography contributed by John Oakes

William Robinson HOOD was born at Cowra, NSW, on 27th October 1890. He joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a cleaner (casual) in the Locomotive Branch at Harden on 23rd March 1914. His position was made permanent on 13th July 1914. On 16th December 1915 he joined the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined with the rank of Private (Service Number 5033) and was posted to the 13th Reinforcements to the 17th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his father, Arthur Rankine Hood of Cowra, as his next of kin.

He embarked aboard the troopship ‘Kyarra’ on 3rd June 1916. While on board, he was in the ship’s hospital with measles from 18th to 30th June 1916.

He left England for France on 30th September 1916 after a period with the 5th Training Battalion. After arriving at the 2nd Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples on 2nd October 1916, he was transferred to the 54th Infantry Battalion, which he joined on 12th October 1916. He remained on duty until 12th February 1917 when he was admitted to hospital suffering from scabies.

After 10 days in hospital he re-joined the 54th Infantry Battalion on 23rd February 1917. However, on 1st March 1917 he was sent to the 15th Field Ambulance with chronic rheumatism. This kept him in hospital for two weeks. He re-joined his unit on 15th March 1917.

He was killed in action on 15th May 1917. On this date the 54th Infantry Battalion was involved in repelling a German counter-attack at the end of the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt.

William is commemorated in the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. The Australian War Memorial gives his place of association as Cowra, NSW.
