44 years ago today, on the 9th November 1977, Sergeant Laurence Lockwood, 35th Battalion (Reg No-139), seaman from 18 Elcho Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and Trafalgar Street, Belmore, N.S.W. and 13 Russell Road, New Lambton, N.S.W. and 19 Downie Street, Wickham, N.S.W. and 9 Carandotta St, Mayfield West, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 83. CATHOLIC 3-99. 158.

Born at Chorlton, Manchester, England on the 9th February 1894 to Alfred and Ada Elizabeth Lockwood of 5 Cecil Street, Whitworth Park, Manchester, England; husband of Nellie Lockwood nee Dunn of 57 Gower Street, London, England (married 13.11.1916, Register Office, St Giles County, London, died 1957? sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-25.70), Laurence enlisted December 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW right leg & hand, severe, Battle of Messines).

Laurence was invalided home December 1917 (with wife Nellie?), being discharged medically unfit on the 22nd January 1918.

Mr. Lockwood’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Lodge No. 423 or 425 Ancient Order of Druids Roll of Honor or Honour. Name not inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial or the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at the gravesite of Mr. Lockwood in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Christopher (58th Battalion, Reg No-2920, born 1895? KIA 25.9.1917, Polygon Wood) also served 1st A.I.F.
