99 years ago today, on the 5th March 1922, Private Patrick McLaughlin (also spelt McLAUGHLAN), Australian Army Veterinary Corps (Reg No-5161), carter from Young Wallsend, Newcastle, New South Wales and Boolaroo, N.S.W., father of four, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 38. ANGLICAN 1-78. 59.

No funeral or death notice located. His service record states Died after Discharge.

Born at Berrima, New South Wales on the 10th June 1883 to John and Mary McLaughlin; husband of Ada Agnes McLaughlin nee Wilcox (married 1907, Wallsend, N.S.W., as McLAUGHLAN, died 1963) of Sixth Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, Patrick enlisted August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 1.1.1917 (trench feet), Patrick returned home November 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 22nd December 1917.

Mr McLaughlin’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Roll of Honour, Sulphide Corporation Pty Ltd Cockle Creek Works Roll of Honour, Young Wallsend Roll of Honour (photos, unveiled on the 9th November 1917, 21 names inscribed, 3 Fallen) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies on Patrick’s brown granite Commonwealth War Graves’s headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
