Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
66 years ago today, on the 16th April 1956, Private John Robert Garner, 17th Battalion (Reg No-59033), carpenter from 133 Lindsay Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 60 off Lindsay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. (1939), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. PRESBYTERIAN-21SE. 110.
Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 14th December 1897 to James (died 1929) and Elizabeth Ann Garner (died 1912) nee Brien, (unsure if John was married), John enlisted May 1918 with the 11th N.S.W. Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 8.10.1918 (not stated).
John returned home on the 5th September 1919, being discharged 20th September 1919.
Did not receive Victory Medal.
Mr. Garner’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor (619 names inscribed, 87 Fallen, unveiled date unknown), Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial and the Hamilton Presbyterian Church (Scots Kirk) Roll of Honour. Name possibly inscribed on the Newcastle Progressive Carpenters & Joiners Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 6th August 1917, whereabouts unknown).
John’s name has not been inscribed on the family headstone, so August 2015 I placed a cross in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Many thanks to John's Grandson Derek Garner for the notification, photo and family history.
Lest We Forget.
