Son of William Henry Vial and Emily Lucy Vial of May Street, St. Peters, NSW.

Served his five year apprenticeship with H.J. Thompson of Sydney, NSW

On 12 May 1916 he return to Australia for recovery from empyema. He later commenced return to the Western Front on 9 September 1916
