From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery.
Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
95 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 18th April 1926, (the only funeral on this day), Private Richard Thomas Curran, 31st Battalion (Reg No-2296), miner (Waratah Colliery, N.S.W.), from Carrington Parade, New Lambton, New South Wales, father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 35. GENERAL-21. 27.
Born at New Lambton, New South Wales on the 11th May 1890 to Richard and Mary Curran; husband of Lily May Curran nee Hunt (married 12.7.1919 at the Parish Church of Melksham, United Kingdom, died?), Richard enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Mr Curran’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor (photo, 266 names inscribed, 43 Fallen, unveiled date unknown), New Lambton War Memorial Gates, and the New Lambton Public School Roll of Honour. Name would be inscribed on the New Lambton (No.33) Loyal Thistle lodge M.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour (not located).
Mr Curran tragically died of injuries at the Newcastle Hospital on the 16th April 1926 when employed at Waratah Colliery he was crushed by a falling stone.
Mr Curran’s headstone plaque has been destroyed, so May 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
A Plaque will be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.
Lest We Forget.
