Richard Eric Bowden
Richard Eric (Dick) BOWDEN (1898-1963) born at Yass, son of William and Sophia Bowden (nee Wark).
He enlisted as Private 1877B, 35th Battalion on January 5th, 1916. He had previous service in the junior cadets for two years and 2 ½ years with the senior cadets and enlisted at the age of 18 years at Goulburn. He embarked for overseas service on board the HMAT Barambah A 37 from Sydney on June 23rd, 1916 with the 55th Battalion 2-5 Reinforcements. After arrival in England he soon found himself in France. He was wounded, on March 6th, - gun shot wound in elbow and again - bullet wound in left forearm on October 12th. His final rank was Lance Corporal, promoted June 23rd, 1917, with the 35th Battalion. He was listed for return to Australia on December 12th, 1918 on the Nestor. He was awarded the Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal on the occasion of his discharge on May 22nd, 1919.
