Son of Francis Samuel Sheffield and Lavinia Sheffield nee Stoddart of Oakington Terrace, Torrensville, SA. Brother of Alfred Ernest Sheefield, Florence Myrtle Sheffielf and Henry Herbert Sheffield

Prior to enlisting he was employed by a Mr. Jones a lucerne grower of Lockleys, SA and was serving with the Citizen Military Forces

Commenced return to Australia on 3 July 1917 aboard HS Karoola disembarking on the 23 August 1917 suffering from Tuberculosis
