Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Leonard Buchanan enlisted the same day as his older brother Donald Spencer Buchanan, both posted to the 15th Battalion AIF. They were the sons of Samuel Alexander and Emily Mosley Buchanan, of Lismore, New South Wales.

Leonard and Donald both arrived on Gallipoli on 16 June 1915. Leonard was evacuated sick in late July and while absent Donald was killed in action near Hill 60 during late August.

Leonard was sent to the Western Front with his unit and was mortally wounded during very heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm on the 28 August 1916. A bullet had fractured his skull and he died of wounds the next day, almost 12 months to the day after his brother had died on Gallipoli.

His parents at least received his effects, medals, and photographs of his grave in the Puchevillers British Cemetery. He was only 20 years of age.
