Herbert's parents were Alfred William Richards and Bessie Polkinghorne. He enlisted at Brisbane 1 January 1916. He was working as a farmer at Zillmere when he enlisted. Herbert was taken on strength to the Camel Corp on 1 July 1916 but was admitted sick to hospital on 25 August 1916. He was then invalided to Australia on 23 September 1916. Herbert married Vera Mabel North in 1918
they are living at Bald Hill in 1925. He eventually moved to Upper Caboolture.
