John was the son of Robert and Anne Bald [nee Stott] of Templers. John
arrived with his unit at Tel- el-Kebir in Egypt on 5 August 1916, having left
Australia on 19 June. From there they proceeded to France where, on 14
August, John was wounded in action sustaining gunshot wounds to the head
and shoulder. After receiving treatment at hospital at Havre, he was admitted
to the General Hospital in Birmingham, England. He rejoined his unit in France
on 12 January 1917, only to be admitted to hospital for a week with scabies on
15 April. John was wounded a second time on 7 June when he was shot in the
back. He spent over four months in Central Military Hospital at Chatham,
England, prior to being able to rejoin his unit in France on 24 October.
John returned to Australia on 5 August 1919 on the Miltiades and was
discharged on 21 September.
