George was born during 1877 at Stockyard Hill, near Beaufort, Victoria and was nearing 40 years of age when he enlisted. His parents were Scottish pioneer farmers of Beaufort, George Kirkpatrick and Janet Glendinning. George died of bronchial pneumonia in England and in his will left 136 acres to his sister Barbara, and another 136 acres to his sister Agnes.

His younger brother 4150 Cpl. Gilbert Andrew Kirkpatrick M.M. 39th Battalion died of wounds 2 July 1918, aged 35.
