Son of John Charles O'Brien and Catherine O'Brien of Goulburn, NSW.

Husband of Annie O'Brien Mason of Wilson Street, Redfern, NSW. James and Annie married during 1925c

Commenced return to Australia on 10 March 1918 aboard HT Durham Castle. On 19 April 1918 he transhipped to HT Irontes at Capetown for continue return to Australia disembarking on 12 May 1918.
