Ernest Edric Victor was the eldest of three children of Ernest Charles Henry Smith (b1874 in Perth WA) and Catherine Eliza Frances Cheeseman (b1879 in London, England). Ernest Snr (a Labourer) and Catherine (a General Servant) married in 1898 in Perth WA. Ernest Snr enlisted in the AIF (Private (Service No:3964) in 1915. He and Catherine settled in North Perth WA where Ernest Snr worked as a Driver.

Ernest Jnr was a Jockey in Perth WA when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1915 - he enlisted as Ernest Edward and put his birthdate back to 1894 on his Attestation Papers. Ernest Jnr served with 28th Infantry Battalion in Gallipoli and France - he was hospitalised on two occasions (in Malta and Heliopolis) and WiA in France in April 1916 (bullet wound to his foot). Ernest Jnr was KiA between 28 and 29 July 1916 (listed officially as 2 August 1916). His effects, returned to his parents, comprised two small photo frames, a small purse and a key. Younger brother Stanley (Private; Service No:64930/56397) also served in WWI.
