| 10 Jun 1918: | Honoured Military Cross, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a fighting patrol sent out to obtain identification from an enemy position at a farm. Finding the farm strongly held, and large enemy working parties in the vicinity, he sent back his patrol, and with his platoon sergeant made a careful reconnaissance of the position under machine gun and rifle fire. Next night, when his company attacked over the same ground, he led his platoon with great dash, and captured three machine guns and eighteen men. Commonwealth Gazette 23, on 12 February 1919 | |

Son of George Orman of Oakington, Cambridge, England.
Prior to coming to Australia Ernest had served with the Cape Mounted Rifles for eight years.
Husband of Irene Bell Orman nee Cruickshank of Joslin Street, Wayville, SA. Ernest and Irene married on 20 November 1916 in the Registry Office, Adelaide, SA.
Commenced return to Australia on 24 August 1918 aboard HT City of Kaarachi disembarking on 10 September 1918 at Melbourne and then overland to Adelaide.
