Son of Thomas and Mary Ridley of John Street, Abermain, NSW. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 2 February 1915 and embarked from Sydney for active service abroad on 12 May 1915 per HMAT "Themistocles" (A32). He died of wounds received in action, aged 34 years.
17th Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F., Service No. 989.
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for "conspicuous gallantry during operations" in Pozieres, France on 10 August, 1916.
The Military Cross was awarded for "a display of fine leadership and bravery" in an attack near Morlancourt, France on 14 May, 1918
He was also awarded the Russian Medal of St George (4th Class) for his actions at Pozieres, France on 22 August, 1922.
His brother, Private Henry Hope Ridley
also fell.
