Died on this date – 16th April…… Private William Money stated on his Attestation Papers that he was born at Mackay, Queensland in 1880.
(Due to the lack of information which could be confirmed & the difference in age listed for William Money – it has been difficult to find precise details of his earlier life.)
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th August, 1914 at Randwick, Sydney, NSW stating he was a 34 year old, single, Miner.
Private William Money, Service number 202, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 18th October, 1914.
He was admitted to No. 2 Australian General Hospital on 16th March, 1915 with Mitral Stenozio & was discharged to lines on 30th March, 1915.
On 12th May, 1915 Private William Money joined 2nd Battalion at Gallipoli.
Private William Money was wounded in action on 19th May, 1915 with shrapnel wounds & compound fracture of Ilium. He was transferred to Malta on 24th May, 1915 on Hospital Ship Soudan. From there he was transferred to England on 6th July, 1915 on Hospital Ship Delta & was admitted to Hospital in Manchester, England on 21st July, 1915.
A Medical Report was completed on Private William Money on 27th September, 1915 at the No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital. Private William Money had his former occupation listed as Engine Driver. He was injured with gunshot wounds to left hip & pelvis on 18th May, 1915 at Gallipoli while he was in the trenches & was wounded in a night attack. Part of his ilium was shot away & his hip joint injured with wounds healed but a considerable shortening of femur. Private Money had been operated on while on Hospital Ship & his wounds drained. He was able to move about with crutches. The Medical Board found that Private William Money should be discharged as permanently unfit.
Private William Money was discharged from Australian Imperial Force at London, England on 18th March, 1916 permanently unfit. He was discharged in consequence of “being no longer physically fit for War Service at Home or Abroad owing to gun shot wound left hip and pelvis.”
Private William Money died on 17th April, 1916 at Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland, however the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has the date of death as 16th April, 1916 as does his headstone. (A letter from Captain Butler, Administrative Headquarters, A.I.F. to Base Records, Melbourne states that William Money died on 17th April, 1916. Base Records then informed The District Paymaster, 2nd Military District of the 17th April, 1916 as the date of death. The Casualty Form – Active Service also has the date of death as 17th April, 1916).
Private W. Money is not commemorated on the Roll of Honour, located in the Hall of Memory Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia as he was medically discharged from the Australian Imperial Force prior to his death.
He was buried in Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland.
