From How We Served

2336a Private Frank Cocks of Mitchem, South Australia had been employed as a labourer when he enlisted for War Service on the 22nd of June 1915 and was allocated to reinforcements for the 27th Battalion 1st AIF.

Embarked for Egypt and further training Frank left Australia on the 13th of October and following the general evacuation of Gallipoli during December, he was taken on strength with his Battalion on the 12th of January 1916. With his Battalion, Frank was shipped to France, arriving on the 21st of March and his service in the trenches would be continuous until he was seriously wounded in action on the 4th of August.

Frank had received multiple gunshot wounds to his left knee, buttock and shoulder which would see him being sent to England for hospitalisation where he was admitted on the 21st of August after having his condition stabilized for travel across the English Channel. Following months of treatment and convalescing Frank was embarked for his return to Australia as an invalid on the 13th of February 1917.

After his arrival he continued to receive treatment at the 7th Australian General Hospital (Keswick) following which he received his official discharge from the 1st AIF on the 12th of September 1917, and was re-entered into civilian life. Frank’s premature death at the age of 41 occurred on the 10th of January 1930 after which he was formally interred within West Terrace Cemetery, South Australia.
