Clive Henry Jones was born on 19/th April 1894 in Corryong, Victoria, to William Francis Jones and Alice, nee Botley.
On 15th June 1915, he enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria. At the time, he was a single, 20-year-old motor engineer living at ‘Bayreanth', Bella Vista St, Caulfield, Victoria. He was allocated Regimental Number 7172 and placed in the 1st Australian Division Train. Clive Henry gave his next of kin as his father, William Jones. As he was not yet 21, Clive needed his father’s permission to enlist, his mother having passed away in early 1915. A handwritten note is contained in Clive’s service record from his father stating that “This is to certify that I the undersigned do consent to my son, Clive Henry Jones enlisting in the Australian Expeditionary Force. My wife died on March 7th 1915.”
After initial training, he embarked on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria at Melbourne, Victoria, on 10th September 1915. Clive's first six months of service were in Egypt before sailing to France and the Western Front. He was transferred to the 6th Australian Motor Transport Company on 12th March 1918.
On 11th May 1919, he returned to Australia aboard the SS Zealandic, with the rank of Driver. He was discharged on 20th September 1919, being awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service during the war.
Clive married Ethel May Richey on 26th May 1923 at St. John's Church of England, Camberwell, Victoria. The couple moved to Swan Hill in Victoria’s north west, and it was here that at least three of their four children were born. He passed away on 13th September 1973 at Bright, Victoria and was buried in Brighton General Cemetery, Victoria.
