Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
108 years ago today, on the 18th July 1917, Corporal John Drummond Johnston, also known as Jack, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1449), apprentice baker from Bunn Street, Wallsend, (Plattsburg) New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Messines Ridge, Belgium, age 19 years 6 months. Cause of death unknown.
No Roll of Honour circular submitted.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Quirindi, New South Wales on the 12th December1897 to Stephen Drummond (died 27.8.1942, Wyong, N.S.W., age?, buried at Presbyterian Cemetery, Wallsend, N.S.W., unmarked grave?, not listed), from Nelson Street, Wallsend, N.S.W. and Macquarie Street, Wallsend, N.S.W., and Margaret (Maggie) Johnston nee Coakley (died 1954?, age?), Jack enlisted on the 1st December 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.
Mr. Johnston’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 25), Belgium.
Place of Association - Wallsend, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
Jack’s name has also been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial, Wallsend Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Newcastle Operative Bakers' Society Roll of Honour.
An individual Memorial Plaque has been placed at The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall, located inside the cemetery grounds.
