The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published 2017, refer to pages 137 to 140 and 263. Prior to the war he was a blacksmith. He first enlisted 15 Dec 1914 aged about 23 or 4 years. He received the usual training and on his pre-departure leave he became so drunk he missed the ship that was taking him to war. Because of that, he was discharged 1st Mar 1915. After a further year he enlisted again, but this time he used his fathers name of Michael John. This enlistment happened 22 Mar 1916, aged 25 years. He saw service with the 17th Infantry Battalion, and during the war period he was awarded a Military Medal and later a Bar for the MM. He had gained a reputation during the 2nd period of enlistment as a cool soldier with good initiative. He left the UK for home 25 January 1919.
