Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
63 years ago today, on the 5th April 1960, Private Harry Harvey, 35th Battalion (Reg No-102), coachsmith (A. Goninan & Co. Ltd), from Fawcett Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 64. ANGLICAN 3-205. 61.
Born at Merriwa, New South Wales on the 12th August 1895 to ? and Matlida Harvey; husband of Gertrude Emily Harvey nee Talbot (married 1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 28.4.1979, sleeping side by side, no headstone - ANGLICAN 3-205. 59), Harry enlisted on the 13th December 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 29.5.1917 (gas poisoning).
Admitted to hospital 25.6.1917 (gassed).
Transferred to England 13.7.1917.
Alfred returned home on the 18th November 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 20th December 1917.
Mr. Harvey’s name has been inscribed on the A. Goninan and Company Roll of Honor.
Not officially commemorated.
There is no headstone for this Digger of The Great War, but 2 wooden crosses had been erected for Harry and wife Gertrude, which had been destroyed, so December 2018 I erected a new cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
