John's parents were Charles Kelly and Mary Diamond. John enlisted 18 January 1916 at Toowoomba. John served in the 41st Battalion, D Company, with Albert Thistlewaite from Samsonvale, John Randall from Albany Creek/Strathpine, Alfred McAfee from Samford and Luke Coe from Strathpine. All four serviceman joined within weeks of each other. John died of wounds in 1918 in France. He is listed on the original Samsonvale Honour Board.
