A section of Joseph's obituary that appeared in "The Maitland Weekly Mercury Sat 2 Jul 1927 reads
"The late Mr. O'Loughlin had an excellent record with the A.I.F. He left Australia with the 34th battalion in November, 1916. A year later he received his commission at a school at Oxford.- He was in the battle of Messines and Villers Brettoneaux.
He had a genial disposition and was well liked by all".
