Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Charles Thomas Hill CHEFFINS and Mary Kathleen nee CHEESMAN

Husband of Bertha CHEFFINS nee MANHOOD

The many friends of Charles Herbert Cheffins were shocked to hear of his sudden passing on Friday last, after a brief bout of pneumonia. The late “Charlie” Cheffins was the third son of the Mr. and Mrs. C. T. H. Cheffins, and was born in Brisbane in the year 1883. When a year old he came to Bowen with his parents and spent his life here. He was educated  at State School and on leaving learnt the carpentering and plumbing trades under his father. He was, with his brother Fred, responsible for many fine buildings in Bowen and elsewhere, including the R C. Church at Bowen, the A. 1. Store, and residence at Babinda for the late Mr. Les Malpass, improvements to the Post Office at Ayr some years ago, the Crown Hotel at Home Hill for Mr. Hayes, and the station residence at Tondara Station for Mr. Atherton.

With his two brothers, Fred and ArcHie he heard his country’s call in the Great War of 1914-18 and in 1915 he enlisted and was posted to the 14th Reinforcements to 2nd Light Horse Regimeht, eventually joining the latter unit on the night when the battle for Romani (Egypt) was at its height. While serving with this unit he was sent for by General Chauvel, to whom he was known personally, and transferred to a new unit called the Australian Flying Corps, which, was to grow to world fame as the R.A.A.F.  He was posted to  No. 1 Squadron. As an air mechanic he served with the A.F.C.  in Egypt and France until the end of the war.  A kindly, unassuming chap, Charlie was well known and respected by his fellow townsmen and his passing will be keenly felt.

He leaves a sorrowing wife and son (now-serving with the R.A.A.F. in Canada) three sisters, Mesdames Bowman. (Melbourne); and T. E. Massy (Bowen), Miss Mary Cheffins (Sydney), and two brothers Fred, and Archie Bowen) to whom the deepest Sympathy will be extended. A sister,
Mrs. Lovelock, passed away in Rockhampton, a few weeks ago. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, the Rev. Sage (C. of England) per forming the last sad rites at the graveside.
