Private George Lake (Service No:4297) enlisted in the AIF on 13 January 1916, and was a Private attached to 28th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit on 1 April 1916 from Fremantle for Alexandria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses. From Alexandria, Private Lake embarked for Plymouth on board HMT Mauretania on 2 June 1916, and served on the Western Front. On 13 April 1917 Private Lake embarked from Plymouth for Fremantle on board HT Baramba, and was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 20 July 1917. Younger brother Tommy served in WWI and WWII, sons George and James and stepsons John and David served in WWII.
George was born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1894, eldest of four children of James Lake (b1870 in Durham, England) and his first wife Margaret (Maggie) Ann Jones (b1873 in Glamorgan, Wales). James (a Miner) immigrated in 1888, arriving in New South Wales on board the Austral, and Maggie arrived in Adelaide, South Australia in 1881 on board the Collingrove. James and Maggie married in Wickham, Newcastle, New South Wales in 1895 and moved to the Western Australian Goldfields in the early 1900s with their two sons. James was a Miner at Finniston via Kalgoorlie in 1906 when Maggie died. James remained in the Kalgoorlie/Boulder Region, where he was a Miner until 1916, when he remarried to Elizabeth Barnes (nee Hardman; b1865 in Lancashire, England) - Elizabeth was a Widow whose husband had died in Collie in a mine accident in 1905 (she and her first husband had immigrated in 1902, arriving in Fremantle on board the Oruba). James and Elizabeth settled in Collie, where James was a Miner.
George was a Miner at Trafalgar via Kalgoorlia, and had served three years in the Militia (86th Battalion) before enlisting in the Army in 1916. Following his Discharge, George settled in Collie where he was a Carter. In 1920 he married Ann (Annie) Annandale (nee Anderson; b1886 in Dundee, Scotland) - Annie, a Widow with four children, had immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle on board the Australind (her husband was KiA in France in 1918). George and Annie settled in Collie, where they raised their family and George worked as a Carter until his death in 1957. Annie died in 1974.
