Biography contributed by Robert Kearney

Raid on Celtic Wood

2788 Private Alexander Galbraith Simpson  was in the field with D Company at the time of the raid and was one of the 19 men who returned unwounded.

In Lieutenant Scott’s Red Cross File, Private Simpson when talking about the fate of Scott said he was in charge of their party. ‘Lieut Scott was killed at Celtic Wood, Passchendaele during a raid. I saw him shot but cannot say if it was by a bullet or shell fragment, now.

In Willie Campion’s Red Cross File is another statement by Private Simpson in which he told the interviewing officer he saw ‘Campion killed at Celtic wood, near Passchendaele. He was killed instantaneously by a shell.’

In 1918 Private Simpson was shot in the chest and died of Pneumonia at Monte Video Hospital, Weymouth, England in November 1918.
