Driver Charles Gilbert (Service No:1170) enlisted in the AIF on 26 February 1915 and was a Private attached to 5th Light Horse Regiment when he embarked from Brisbane for Alexandria on 10 August 1915 on board HMAT A55 Kyarra. Private Gilbert served in Egypt and France with 2nd Light Horse Reserves and 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, and was promoted to Driver in France on 1 November 1916. Driver Gilbert embarked from England for the RTA on 21 March 1919 on board the Kilburnian Castle and was Discharged on 7 July 1919.
Born in Brisbane QLD in 1888, Charles was the second of three children of William Carrington Gilbert (b1860 in Brisbane, QLD) and first wife Mary Robinson (b1886 in Lancashire, England) - Mary immigrated in 1884, arriving in QLD on board the Scottish Hero. William (a Butcher) and Mary married in 1885 in Brisbane, QLD. Following Mary's death in 1900, William remarried and raised his family in Brisbane where he was a Butcher.
Charles started work as a Butcher in Brisbane in the early 1900s, and was a Labourer in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1919, Charles returned to Brisbane where he worked as a Labourer and in 1920 married Edith Honor Draper (b1895 in Brisbane, QLD). Charles and Edith settled in Brisbane where they raised their family and Charles worked as a Labourer and French Polisher. Charles died in 1937 and Edith in 1974.
