Husband of Josephine Fortesque TOMBS Of Cowper St, Waverley, NSW
William was born at Crumlin, South Wales, in January 1876, and came to Australia in 1899. He was connected with the advertising staff of the Sydney Morning Herald for some years prior to his enlistment.
Joining the Australian Imperial Force as a Private in March, 1916, he sailed with reinforcements for the 34th Battalion. Reaching France in April 1917, he saw fighting at Armentieres, Le Touquet, Passchendaele, Morlancourt, and from Villers Bretonneux to Bony. He attained the rank of Sergeant early in his military career, and finally acted as Quartermaster Sergeant.
