Herbert John (‘Bert’) White was born Bungey, Suffolk, England in 1886. He enlisted on the 26.1.16 at Perth, aged 30 years 3 months. He was a shunter with the WA Government Railways and Presbyterian. His father, John White, was still living in Bungey, England, but John’s home address was 48 Ellen St, Fremantle. He was described as being 5 feet 7½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33½ - 35½ inches, fresh complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. He was appointed a Private with the Service number 162 in A Company of the 44th Infantry Battalion. Herbert embarked on the 6.6.16 from Fremantle on HMAT Suevic, A29.

On the 2.11.16 he forfeited 5 days’ pay for being absent without leave for three days near the end of October. On the 8.6.17 he was wounded in action and sent to hospital in England with a severe gunshot wound to his right arm. Herbert returned to Australia on the 20.12.17 per A54 Runic. Suffering from Arthritis of the Carpus, he disembarked at Fremantle on the 6.2.18 and was admitted to the 8th AG hospital, Fremantle. On the 19.7.18 he was discharged from hospital and from the AIF on the 2.8.18. He returned to work with the WA Government Railways and lived in Keane St, Cottesloe.

Herbert died on the 19.9.1949 in Peppermint Grove, aged 63. He was buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, Presbyterian portion KA, grave 0180.
