Son of Thomas Edward Utting and Emily Utting nee Barkley of Wellington Street, Collingwood, Victoria. Brother of Ernest Utting who returned to Australia on 17 August 1916 having served with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 July 1919 aboard HT Frankfurt disembarking on 20 August 1919

During 1937c Charles married Hazel Frances McDonald in Victoria
