Donald was the youngest of two children of Jabez Francis Hicks (born 1871 in Fremantle, Western Australia) and Barbara Miller (born 1870 in Aberdeen, Scotland). Jabez - a Grocer and owner and trainer of the racehorse Donah, married Barbara in Fremantle in 1896. Jabez died three months before Donald's birth in 1900.
Donald was a Clerk in Fremantle, WA when he enlisted in the AIF in 1917, He served as a Private (Service no:7069) with the 28th and 27th Infantry Battalions in Belgium and France, and was Discharged in February 1920.
Returning to Fremantle, Donald worked as a Clerk until 1925, when he became a Storekeeper until his death in 1966.
