Jack Keen suffered a severe gun shot wound to his thigh on the 2 December 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment. It would be nearly 10 months before he was recovered and rejoined the 31st Battalion in Belgium, only a month before his death. According to his Red Cross File, Keen was severely wounded by a shell when he was manning a listening post on 26 November 1917, and died shortly after whilst being carried to aid.
His older brother 3074 Private George William Keen, 13th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, 29 August 1916.
