Pte Barling enlisted on 5 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard either HMAT Bakara on 5 November 1915 or HMAT Wandilla on 9 November 1915. Sheriff's bailiff vanishes
Joseph Henry Barling, 53, sheriff's bailiff at the Melbourne Practice Court for the past 14 years, has been missing from his home at Richmond since Monday. Mr Barling was wounded by shrapnel during the First World War. He has been on sick leave for more than two months. He was last seen at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, when he left his home in Lennox Street, Richmond. He was a widower, and has one son, 22, who works at the State Offices.
His description is: 5ft. 9in.; stocky build; thick, wavy grey hair; grey eyes; sallow complexion. He was wearing a navy-blue coat, with wide pencil stripes, plain blue trousers, blue shirt, white collar, brown-felt hat, black shoes and a yellow metal wrist-watch.

Body in River
The body of Joseph Henry Barling, 63, of Lennox-street, Richmond, was found last night in the Yarra, near Burnley. Mr. Barling had been missing since February 25.
